Communique of the ECU Board Meeting in Terme Catez, Slovenia

The second quarterly meeting of the ECU Executive Board for 2024 took place in Terme Catez, Slovenia, during the 2024 European Senior Chess Championship. The Slovenian federation, known for its great hospitality, organised the tournament and the board meeting in excellent conditions.

Main information and decisions:

  • Mr Boris Kutin, former ECU President and current member of the ECU Board of Trustees, was warmly welcomed at the meeting . Mr Kutin suggested that the ECU should take part in the celebrations of the European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica – Gorizia.
  • By proposal of ECU President Mr. Zurab Azmaiparashvili the Board unanimously appointed Mrs. Antoaneta Stefanova (BUL) as ECU Ambassador to the European Union and Mr. Adrian Mikhalchishin (UKR) as ECU lifetime Ambassador to honor his contribution and continuous support on the European chess.
  • The Board discussed the further development of ECU TV and planned the next steps for branding,  software and hardware upgrades in order to offer the broadcast of European Championships at the highest level, but also to develop our own weekly chess programmes.
  • The Memorandum of agreement was signed with the Aegean University to launch the “Chess in Primary Education” academic course, starting in June 2024.  The Board discussed the way to promote and support the academic level course to teachers and chess trainers around the world.
  • The next ECU Board meeting and the General Assembly 2024 will take place in Budapest, Hungary during the World Chess Olympiad, on the 18th and 19th of September respectively.
  • By the occasion of the meeting, ECU General Secretary Theodoros Tsorbatzoglou received a special award from FIDE for his contribution to the development of chess in Switzerland, Europe and worldwide. The awards are in connection with the 100th anniversary of FIDE. The official award ceremony took place in Bern in April 2024, but Mr Tsorbatzoglou was unable to attend.

European Chess Championships

1.The 2024 European Women’s Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship was announced from 9 to 13 January 2025 in Monte Carlo, with doubled prize fund than in the last edition (22,500 to 45,000 euros).

2. The following bids were received and approved by the ECU Board by the term an inspection report to be made where there is a new venue:

  • European Rapid & Blitz Chess Championship 2026, Lisbon, Portugal
  • European Team Open and Women Chess Championship 2027, Lagos, Portugal
  • European Senior Team Chess Championship 2026, Rhodes, Greece
  • European Senior Individual Chess Championship 2026 , Aqui Terme, Italy
  • European Youth Rapid & Blitz Chess Championship 2026, Rzeszow, Poland
  • The European Union Youth Chess Championship will be held in Kouty and Desnou, Czech Republic, as an ECU affiliated event in August 2024.
