European Amateur Chess Championship 2024 concluded in Croatia

The 2024 European Amateur Chess Championship took place from 24th August to 1st September in Mali Losinj, Croatia.

The event was played in three age categories: U1700, U2000 and U2300, and the Winners of each category were crowned the European Amateur Chess Champions for the respective rating section.

Despite a loss in the last round, CM Korab Saraci (KOS, 2186) emerged as the sole Winner of the U2300 tournament, scoring 6.5 points. Three players tied for silver scoring 6 points each: Luka Skuhala (SLO, 2145), Loris Tavernier (FRA, 2008) and Muhamet Asllani (KOS, 2232), but Luka Skuhala had the best tiebreaks to claim silver, Loris Tavernier won bronze, and Muhamet Asllani finished fourth. The best ranked women player in the event was Olena Lutsenko (SLO, 1761) who claimed the title of the European Women’s Amateur Chess Champion 2024 in U2300 section.

A thrilling last round and the tiebreak criteria determined the Winners of the U2000 championship, as three players finished the tournament scoring 7 points, each: Dejan Jakovljevic (SRB, 1876), Iliia Lunin Bohomolets (ESP, 1960) and Dominic Gibbs (ENG, 1945). Dejan Jakovljevic had the best tiebreaks to clinch gold, Iliia Lunin Bohomolets finished second, and Dominic Gibbs won bronze medal. Timea Sele (LIE, 1699) was the best ranked women player in the event and became the European Women’s Amateur Chess Champion for the U2000 section.

Martin Sintic (CRO, 1486) and Ilker Pazarcioglu (TUR, 1666) tied for the top of the U1700 section scoring 7 points each, but Martin Sintic won gold thanks to better tiebreaks, while Ilker Pazarcioglu claimed silver. Irena Pajer (POL, 1515) scored 6.5 points to win bronze medal, and to emerge as the best female player in the event, winning the title of the European Women’s Amateur Chess Champion 2024 for the U1700 category.

The Closing ceremony of the event took place yesterday afternoon, with the attendance of the ECU Vice President Mr. Alojzije Jankovic who addressed the players and took part in the Awarding ceremony.
