The 2024 European Youth Team Chess Championship commenced in Rhodes, Greece. With the participation of 58 teams from 16 European federations, the event broke the participation record.
The Opening ceremony of the event took place shortly before the start of the first round, with the ECU Secretary General Mr. Theodoros Tsorbatzoglou and the special guest, President of the Asean Chess Confederation Mr. Leong Ignatius played the first ceremonial moves on the top boards.
The first two rounds saw some upsets in all four sections (U12 and U18, separate open and girls sections). Israel and Poland emerged as the leaders of the U18 category with perfect score of 4 match points, while Romania, Turkey, Slovenia and Armenia follow with 3 match points each.
Three German teams are currently on the top of the GU18 section with a maximum score of 4 match points, and Israel/Blue, Ukraine, Poland, Israel/White and Romania score 2 match points each.
Germany, Poland and Romania co-lead in the U12 category scoring 4 match points, and they are followed by a group of eight teams scoring 2 match points each.
In the GU12 category, four teams score perfect 4 match points to tie for the top: Turkey, Germany, Romania and Estonia, and five teams are trailing by two match points.
