The 2024 edition of the Norway Chess kicks off this Monday in Stavanger. The event features Open and Women’s tournaments, which will be played in the same system, with the equal prize funds.
The tournaments will be held from 27th May to 7th June in the SR Bank venue. Each tournament features the line-up of six players, played in a double round-robin system, with time control of 120 minutes with an increment of 10 seconds starting from move 41. The playing system will determine the winner in each round. If the classical game finishes in a draw, the winner will be determined in the Armageddon game.
Players will get the following points per round: Win in the classical game: 3 points; Loss in the classical game: 0 points; Draw in the classical game & win Armageddon: 1½ points; Draw in the classical game & loss Armageddon: 1 point.
World No1 Magnus Carlsen headlines the field in the Open tournament, and the line-up includes Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Ding Liren, Praggnanandhaa R, and Alireza Firouzja.
The reigning Women’s World Chess Champion Ju Wenjun is the top-seeded in the Women’s competition, including Lei Tingjie, Koneru Humpy, Anna Muzychuk, Vaishali Rameshbabu, and Pia Cramling in the field.
The prize fund of each event is 1,690,000 NOK, with 700,000 NOK reserved for the Winner. In case that the two players share the first place after the last round, there will be a Play-off to decide the winner.
The Play-off consists of a two-game blitz match with the time control of 3 min. + 2 sec. increment per move. If this match ends in a tie, a further match will be played. If this match ends in a tie, there will be an Armageddon game where white has 10 minutes and black, with draw odds, has 7 minutes both with an increment of 1 second per move, starting from move 41.
Simultaneously with the round-robin tournaments, the Norway Chess Open 2024 will take place from 24-30 May. The Open tournament is played in two groups: GM and ELO, with the venue at the Clarion Hotel Energy, Stavanger.
